Our Bible study on Original Sin will delve into the profound consequences of Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden. We will explore how this pivotal event impacted not only our first parents, but also humanity as a whole, leaving us with a fallen nature inclined towards sin. The study will draw heavily from Genesis 3, Romans 5, and the teachings of the Church Fathers to understand the spiritual wounds inflicted by Original Sin: the darkening of our intellect, the weakening of our will, the disordering of our passions, and our proneness to death. This isn’t about dwelling on despair, but rather acknowledging the reality of our brokenness so that we may more fully appreciate God’s merciful plan of redemption.
We will examine how Christ, the New Adam, offers us healing and restoration through His sacrifice on the Cross and the sacraments of the Church. Baptism washes away the stain of Original Sin, though the effects of our fallen nature remain, providing us the opportunity to cooperate with grace and strive for holiness throughout our lives. Practically, understanding Original Sin helps us cultivate humility, recognize our need for God’s grace, and persevere in the daily battle against temptation. By acknowledging our inherent weakness, we can better rely on prayer, the sacraments, and the guidance of the Church to navigate the challenges of life and grow in virtue, ultimately striving for union with God.
