Our Bible study, “The Eucharist: Calvary Re-presented, Bread of Eternal Life,” delves into the very heart of our Catholic faith. We will explore how the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not merely a symbolic re-enactment of the Last Supper, but a true and real re-presentation of Calvary. Through careful examination of Scripture, particularly the words of institution (“This is my body…This is my blood”) and the accounts of the early Church, we’ll see how the Eucharist makes present the one perfect sacrifice of Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. Understanding this reality allows us to approach the Mass with deeper reverence, gratitude, and a greater appreciation for the immeasurable gift given to us by Our Lord.
Beyond the sacrificial nature of the Eucharist, we will also focus on its role as the Bread of Eternal Life. Drawing upon scriptural passages such as John 6, where Jesus proclaims Himself the “bread of life” and declares that those who eat His flesh and drink His blood have eternal life, we will examine the profound spiritual nourishment the Eucharist provides. This study will encourage us to regularly receive Holy Communion in a state of grace, understanding it as not only a participation in the sacrifice of Christ, but also as a source of grace that strengthens us in our earthly pilgrimage and prepares us for our eternal home in Heaven. Practical application of this knowledge includes a renewed commitment to frequent Confession, preparation before Mass, and a conscious effort to live out the graces received in our daily lives, becoming true witnesses of Christ’s love to the world.
