Peter, the Rock: Papal Authority and Infallibility

This Bible study, “Peter, the Rock: Papal Authority and Infallibility,” delves into the scriptural foundation for the Pope’s unique role in the Church. We’ll carefully examine Matthew 16:13-20, where Jesus declares Peter to be the “rock” upon which He will build His Church, promising him the “keys to the kingdom of heaven.” This passage, understood in light of Old Testament precedents and early Church tradition, points to a specific and enduring office of leadership bestowed upon Peter and his successors. We will also consider other relevant scriptural passages that highlight Peter’s primacy among the Apostles and his role in guiding the early Church.

Furthermore, we will explore the dogma of papal infallibility, as defined by the First Vatican Council. This doesn’t mean the Pope is impeccable or without sin, but that, under specific circumstances, when he solemnly defines a doctrine of faith or morals to be held by the whole Church, he is preserved from error by the Holy Spirit. Understanding this teaching helps us appreciate the gift of the Magisterium, the Church’s teaching authority, which ensures the faithful transmission of Christ’s truth throughout the ages. Practically, this study invites us to deepen our trust in the Church’s leadership, to pray for the Holy Father, and to engage with Church teachings with an open mind and a spirit of obedience rooted in love for Christ and His Bride.
