This Bible study delves into the profound mystery at the heart of our Catholic faith: Jesus Christ, simultaneously and perfectly both true God and true man. We will explore the scriptural foundations for this dogma, examining passages that reveal Jesus’ divine nature—His miracles, His claims of unity with the Father, His acceptance of worship—alongside those that demonstrate His genuine humanity—His emotions, His physical limitations, His suffering and death. We will unpack how the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, has understood and articulated this truth throughout the centuries, combating heresies that sought to diminish either His divinity or His humanity.
Understanding Jesus as both God and man is not simply an academic exercise. It is essential for comprehending the entirety of salvation history. Only God could atone for the sins of humanity, and only a man could offer that sacrifice on our behalf. Jesus’ dual nature is also the model for our own lives. As baptized Christians, we are called to participate in the divine life through grace, while remaining firmly rooted in our human nature. The study will encourage us to contemplate the Incarnation, the moment God became man, and to embrace our own call to holiness, striving to reflect Christ’s love and compassion in our daily interactions, remembering that by following Him, we grow closer to the God-man who redeems us.
